Mowing Wet Lawn
#1

Hi all just wondering people's thoughts on mowing wet lawns.
We have had 2 x days straight of downpours here in Perth.I was just curious as to what other members do.
I mowed 2. x lawns one was full of leaves so I used my mulch & catch super swift. All the leaves got squashed into the mower and left a terrible mess.
The other lawn (newly established buffalo).
I found was fine to mow but difficult to clean up I estimated an extra 20min picking up clippings.
Do contractors find something else to do on these days or push through.

I dont work when the lawns are to wet.

You do a chit job.

Id rather have the time off and catch up later.

Great time to do paperwork, chores and maintenance and help the local publican make some money.

I have a quiet week, so have managed to push my customers forward to avoid the wet weather.

I had to do one today, I caught most of it, just did the best i could to clean up. The customer will just have to understand if they really want it done on the day.

When I first started out, i just pushed through, but now I would much rather take the day off and reschedule, my customers seem to happy about it :)

Don't worry, plenty of that around Perth at the moment too, I can't wait for Summer to nick off so I'm not covered in sand and crap everyday. Bit lucky to have a bit of rain around the last two day's.

Yesterday I mowed all day in a constant light drizzle and I must say I actually enjoyed it after the heat we have had over here in the west.

At the end of the day I did 12 mow jobs and a reticulation job, didn't get home until 6.30pm, but I wasn't knackered.

All in it was a good day.

I don't mow in the wet - light drizzle I guess as long as it will catch OK - one of the sweetest sounds I remember from my last spell as a contractor was to wake up to the sound of rain on the roof - a day off! - doesn't happen in Brisvegas any more - it's beautiful one day, perfect the next

My mower catches wet grass no worries is as clean as if dry.  depends on your mower,

My Honda HRU216M2 with 4 highlift blades and the rev's raised to over 3600 and the thin catcher bags.

Tip:  one thing i do also is mow anti clockwise,  2/3 cuts,  this way the throwing side of the mower the lawn is already cut so increased airflow and the blades are just putting the clippings in the bag not cutting.

Agree with this and I do the same (and have posted the save advice before)

SP drive mechanism eats up room at the rear of the mower. Push and (rare e.g.: Toro) front wheel drive SPs have full width rear chute.

EDIT: I had a wide sweep Ariens FWD but the wheels were very skinny and it tended to sink in wet ground.

Advantage of FWD is no drive when you lift the front wheels, they turn easier and a quick push down on the handle stops the drive (removes contact with ground) as opposed to having to let the drive engage bar go. I haven't seen an FWD in many years but they are still out there.

Thanks Bakes, how does it go in the wet? and do you have any idea what it weighs? - I've got an HRX217 and I'm looking for something smaller and lighter but still self propelled that will catch in the wet where the HRX won't.

Cheers
