Average Mow Time And $ P/h
#1

Over the last fortnight decided to time all my regular mows and was surprised a bit how most were shorter than I thought.  My average mow is 39 mins- from pulling up to driving off, so doesn't include travel time.   I then worked out my average $ earnt - works out to be $96/hr.

That doesn't include a lot of time though- travel between jobs, tip runs, maintenance time, book keeping, refuelling, quoting.

Good work Plucka! - I need to buy some longer legs next time Aldi have them in the catalogue  :) - I can get that in winter and touch on it now - but not average it - I used to time mine with a stopwatch from eBay but stopped a while ago - before I started mulching so many - might be time to try it again.

I probably should add that if i leave home @ 8 and am back at 12 for $300 thats $75/hour, every bit of time is accountable.

I take photos and use the time stamps

They come with date, time and a picture of whatever you pointed the phone/camera at and if you have location services on, GPS map point on where you was at!

This is similar to what I do. I start work when I leave home and I finish when I'm at home.

if I start at 9 and I'm home at 1 and ive earnt $200 then ive made $50 an hr.

Ive been a good boy lately and just having a quiet one at home.

I'm bleeding cash ATM on new gear, repairs, Cold Chisel concert last Wednesday night (they rocked btw!!), Cat Stevens in Melbourne this Monday night and then on to the Gibbsland lakes for a few days R&R.

But Thai lunch Friday put a dent into 3 hrs...

To put the hourly rate we try to achieve into perspective, I was in my local bottle shop over the weekend - young guy about 20 bopping around asking me how my day's been so far - I say fine how's yours - he says "Great, I got called in to work early today, an extra 2 hours at $60 an hour, what's not to like"

And even more perspective. Get any kind of service at your house, sparky, plasterer, mechanic, builder etc and expect to pay at least $100 an hour.

Eg Sparky installing a new light fitting. He quotes you $120....sounds reasonable and he is in and out in 30 mins. He may take longer, he may do it quicker....but it is still $120.

I hold this in my mind when I quote.

Good to pass on what we can potentially earn without an electrical license to others. Hold in your mind I don’t agree with anything you are saying.

average, all depends on the time of year, seasonal weather, grass type & lawn growth.  having a $40 a hour lawn in spring could be a $60 hour lawn over the year.  this is what i have found.

typical $40 lawn 21 cuts per year

60min @ $40 per hour,  High growth periods, spring when the lawn is full of moisture & heavy, edges.  6 cuts

40min @ $60 per hour,  Normal growth, During normal growth periods. 9 cuts

30min @ $80 per hour,  Slow.  During slow growth periods late summer & mid/late winter. 6 cuts

Average over the year,  21 x cuts 900minutes =  43 minutes per cut @  $56 per hour

Hi Colsy,
With all your nursery and gardening experience you gained, plus you were a part of middle management team. You are a smart cookie; I couldn't understand why you can't start your own business, with the skills and management under your belt. Are you relying on leads for Jim's to get by? Or don't have the confidence to go out by yourself?

I don't have as much experience as yourself, I mowed lawns at home, and I started a business and we already have 3-4 regulars and no $11 lead fee or monthly franchise fees of $600. The reason why a franchise charge higher, is that they have to cover their fees. Take away all the costs in your first year; you most likely be making under $60 per hour? Any lead fee that comes in that doesn't mean guarantee work, and you have to pay that. Your $60ish per hour, minus $11 lead fee if it's work or not, plus $600 per month.

Wouldn't you be better of doing it yourself with all the experience and management skills? We all make our own decisions.
