Start with regular and frequent mowing
1/3 rule (you can Google 1/3 lawn cut)
mow on a high setting is better than low cutting (scalping)
herbicides (what you loosely refer to as weed killer) only as a last option

POST EDIT:
Thanks for visiting Lawn Club. DJ

Appreciate the response mate but won't just cutting it down spread the weed even more because as you can see it's already pretty rampant. But if you're saying a good old regular 1/3 cut will do it then sweet. Otherwise what herbicide should I use as a last resort?

broadleaf killer, bromoxynil might work....or paint it with glyphosate - it looks like a thistle variety so don't let it flower/seed

It's not a weed it's leafy vegetable called puha (poo-har). Question i have is what is it doing over there,it's supposed to be a nz native. It's quite bitter & needs boiling to remove it.Yellow flowers can be eaten as is..Animals love it

Anything with glyphosate will kill it. 10mls glypho per a litre of water will do it.If there's only one or two you could just use a paintbrush & apply the concentrate directly to the leaf..Other option dig it out as it grows from a centre clump & plant it in your neighbours garden  (que mutley laugh)
