Most of the failures are related to the user not knowing what they are doing. Treated properly a Honda gearbox will average around 60k worth of work before it needs replacement. It has saved your body from being overworked and you will have much more energy at the end of the day. A new gearbox is only up to $300, I can replace one in an hour.

Cheers

Victa commercial is another option, but it is only 19inches.

I have both Honda 216 faker and Victa and don't really find to much difference in time taken, but I find the Victa gives a better cut.

In saying that I use the Honda more. I mainly use Reel mowers and the rotary is for roughies.

I’ve only ever used Honda so I can’t really recommend anything else, but I did have a Rover for a short period of time and I spent more time fixing it than using the machine so it had to go. I do hear of problems with John Deer and Toro drive systems but again that’s just someone else’s opinion. Look for a 216 or 217 if you want Honda, Victa Mulchmaster is good too.

I'm surprised that the victa gives a better cut...  I'll look into the victa ...Thanks

Every Contractor i see has a Honda mower and I suppose that's for a good reason...

When you said before that some people mis treat the gearbox and that's why it fails early...  Whats the proper way to treat the gearbox? ..  Any advice is great !

Slam it into drive, it’s a dog clutch and will shatter itself if it’s constantly half engaged. The older non braked Honda 216 is much lighter and the box lasts longer. The weight of a full catcher going up hills adds extra strain. Mulching as much as possible will make it last longer. As for the 217 I’ve only heard of minor issues they seem very good.

Thanks mate ...I'll look at the Masport...Its hard to go past the Honda at this stage though...  I'm surprised about John Deere and Toro...  You would think they would be quality machines

I've found I'm using the Victa Mulchmaster more that the Honda 217. Even the wife is picking it over the Honda now she is used to it.

Honda does cut better but the MM is lighter and larger cut

I am seriously considering one of the Ego SP 21/20 mowers just for the weight angle.

Some here are using the mower, more using the trimmers etc etc. In the USA battery powered walk behind and ride on with all day battery and solar charging while your driving around on it , No Probs.  :)

l'd wait a couple more years b4 going for a cordless mower, no one has made one to suit Aussie commercial requirements yet...... but they're getting closer (unless you're only mowing manicured lawns 100% of the time)
