Just kicking this off again - lot of the stuff I have posted had Youtube clips that I've saved so I'll start putting what I can back up.

From memory some valuable stuff:-

  • boats.net and common spares Honda part numbers
  • carby problems and rebuild guides
  • open weave catcher bags
  • GCV190 valve clearance adjustments
  • drive wheel disassembly and cleaning and fixing  reversing resistance

Well done crocster, valuable info.   Sad story though for my HRX217 though, pull cord became stuck, repair shop told me the exhaust valve had become stuck open, damaging the engine internals.  Requires engine rebuild or new engine, both around $900.  Not worth doing so bought a new one, guess I can keep it for spares, had 420 hours on it.

I'm observing a minute's silence as I read this Plucka - RIP HRX - yes I'm going to buy another one in the next couple of weeks - mine has the top end clatters and I've been "gunna" adjust the valve clearances since before Xmas - now it's developed an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket so I've got no choice - but I figure I've had a good trouble free run out of it and it's worth something on Gumtree so it's time to change horses.

They quoted me $600 in parts, so I'm getting a list of parts from them.  Sure I can find them on boats for a fraction that price, then it might be worth paying the labour to get it going again and keep as a spare or sell it.

I’ve often wondered the economics of (paying for) services vs running it to death.
If you got the valves checked and tuned up every 100 hours what’s the cost, $3-500? So then the engine will last, but will the US$200+ transmission.
Or just do oil changes and the odd spark plug then buy another one the day it carks it. I’m in the second camp.

Second camp for me too - maintenance only but sell while they're still in good nick and will fetch maybe 30% of what you paid for them on Gumtree - 2-3 seasons? - think I pushed it a bit too far with this one - see if the valve clearances quieten it down - still sell it for couple hundred anyway - cheap mowing really and you've always got reliable gear.

Some great info here Croc

...  I service all my own equipment.. every 25 hours..  But one a year I will drop my gear off to the local dealer to get the valves checked ...its pretty cheap to get them done

My next mower will be a HRX

Go get one now, then your back up will be a 216 instead of a pusher

Got my HRX back from the shop along with a list of the $600 in parts they wanted.  I just sourced the same parts on boats for $US107,   lol.

Took the valve cover off and like they said the exhaust valve was stuck closed, but 2 hits with a hammer freed it up again, guessing it was just gummed up. Noticed though that the rocker arm is cracked.  I have no idea why the shop thinks it needs a new cylinder block and rebuild.   The valve seems to be working fine again so I'm just going to replace the rocker arm ($3 part on boats) and see if that fixes it.   Be funny if the $900 fix turns into a $3 fix.

sounds like you got "up sold" by the mechanic..  i bet you will fix it for the minimal price you say..

Mechanics are workshops are in the business to make money...if they can turn your $5 problem into a $500 problem they will..

I got the wife to take my landcrusier to the local mechanic the adjust the handbrake..  they turned a simple adjustment into a $600 problem...replacing all disk brakes....  So as it turns out...i did it my self..  took me an hour in my driveway...and it was a job i didn't really want to do..  but I fixed it myself....just a simple adjustment.. I lost a lot of respect for a once trusted mechanic that day
