So I Just Bought A Cylinder Mower
#1

Well.... i had no intention on ever buying a cylinder mower.. I recently cut a lawn for a friend and I seen he had a cylinder mower sitting in his garage, it was in great condition and I asked him just out of curiosity you how much he wanted for it ... he said $300 so I snapped it up.. it has a brand-new engine on it changed under warranty. He bought it from a mower shop and the engine only lasted five minutes and blew up so they replaced it with a whole brand-new engine .. winning !!
I know nothing about these style on mowers and I would only ever use this on my own property but I think my grass is not suited to it as I have Kikuyu out the back and Sapphire Buffalo out the front. I’m gonna try and get my grass height down so the cylinder mower will be suitable for it and paint some stripes!  !!KOE6c4.jpg

Way to go Ando !

Forget the Ego & the 216, now you have a mower that will give you a "reel" quality cut.

Don't know about carrying it up & down stairs though ? ....... lol.

Make sure its adjusted with the paper test though.

It will cut your kik & buff just fine.

Cheers Fred.

ps, nice tyre swan ....    :P

Thanks Fred...Its bloody heavy mate...it wont be leaving my place...that's for sure..

Ive been watching some you tube video's about these...and I seen the paper test...I think mine might need a new barrel cutter..

the set up needs a tune..

I have been cutting my Kikuyu and buffalo pretty thick with my rotary..No# 6 or 7 on the 216...and I'm finding i need to scalp them down to #5 height so the Cylinder mower can work at its highest level ..

Ive just been out the back now...cutting backwards and forwards to get the height down...

I lurve my tyre swan :P

Congrats Ando, Scott bonnar with a new Briggs I/C engine - looks like a screamin bargain no matter what you need to do to the cutting setup

Yeah, the forum is full of cylinder mow nuts who mow twice a week - and from posts I've read you won't have any trouble cutting your grass species once you get the height set and any thatch sorted - looking forward to some pics once you get it down.

its a 17 inch model 45. Good score for $300 . May need a backlap or regrind and new bottom blade . Take a pic of the front edge of the bottom blade. and a close up of one of the cylinder blades

it needs a new barrel cutter ...looks like the previous owner was cutting steel with it...  its bent !!

bottom blade looks the same..

I think I have an aftermarket height adopter which is better suited to buffalo sorted ..

The cylinder is alright , It just needs a regrind and a new bottom blade, if its bent they will straighten it . There is aplace in sydney that specializes in reel mowers , Im not sure of there name but they will sort it out , much cheaper than a new reel
